Flashy. Ubiquitous. Chivalrous. Kissable, you Valentine’s Day

Flashy. Ubiquitous. Chivalrous. Kissable, you Valentine’s Day

(Picture was found on Google yada yada yada. I did not create this yada yada yada...just clearing my a$$

So does he hate Valentine’s Day or does he like it? Well here’s the thing, when I was in my early 20’s I hated Valentine’s Day. I hated it because it was such a commercial holiday, a day where lovers frivolously threw their relationship in your face. It’s a day set aside for lovers, a fairy tale kind of day, a day where nothing can go wrong and you shower your lover with gifts, a day that has to be perfect or if it’s not, you end up paying for it for the whole year; spend a crap load of money on one day or spend a crap load of money and hear it for the whole year? You pick your poison. As my argument towards Valentine’s Day begin to make me look like a cheap bastard, a nightmare of a boyfriend sort of speak, I started to think: Why do I hate this day so much?
It’s such a commercial holiday and maybe some part of me is a hipster. I mean the idea that some other girl/guy are being treated special on the same day, the guy or girl who is a complete jerk or bitch to each other are sharing a day of love with you. I know, it’s not about them but it becomes about them when you go out on the town and see other couples. I’ve seen couples on Valentine’s Day and you can see the love between them. It could be an act but we all know true love when we see it? Do we? As I got older and went through a relationship with a woman who sort of shared a similar view, Valentine’s slowly begin to warm my heart up, but not fast enough. She was still on the fence about not celebrating the holiday and I was hoping maybe we could create our own Valentine’s Day.

A day set aside for us, a day that celebrates our love, something that was not our anniversary, a day were all the women in the office mumbled under their breathe, “That bitch Why does she get random roses?” Something that would truly make her feel special, a day where she shines because she got roses and another gift is coming when she gets off of work. I remember the florist asked me one day in May, “What’s the special occasion?” I told him, “there was no special occasion, I love her and I want her to feel special on a day that’s not special.” The girl behind the counter almost took her panties off when I said that. It wasn’t a pick up line, it was flashy, ubiquitous, chivalrous, and kissable. =) FUCK……Valentine’s Day has made me realize that, everyday is a special day for someone. Everyday someone is born and everyday someone has a birthday; which by the way, I wonder if there is one day in the year someone does not have a birthday? I digress, actually, I didn’t digress, this is segwaying into my now emotion. I’ve come to realize that every day is a special day. Every day we meet someone, whose birthday could be the day you don’t think is special; that person may become the most special person in your life and to think, that day at one point meant nothing to you.

I might be thinking too deeply about this because now, I find myself wondering….maybe Flashy, Ubiquitous, Chivalrous, and Kissable you isn’t right to scream at Valentine’s Day…I mean, it is a special day right?

  1. Funny how we both just put up Valentine's Day posts. Even thought its commercialized and a Hallmark holiday we still get sucked into the romance of it all.

    1. Hey Phil! Yeah I just saw your post on FB and was about to go read it. lol. Thanks for commenting! I'm confused about that day as well. The commercial side to it is very hideous and makes the holiday a day you want to aim a bow and arrow at cupid as well. lol...

  2. I'm a self professed Valentine Grinch!...I won't ruin your celebration...but I will make fun of you as you celebrate! lol
I honestly cannot recall a time when I ever really 'got' Valentines Day.
But I guess to each his own.
I'll be stealing your 'special day' idea in my next relationship. Thanks for that!

    1. Neavada Dames, I don't celebrate Valentine's Day in that manner. I actually dislike the holiday for the fact that it has a very fake essence to it. Valentine's day has so much stressed importance to it, however it is a special day. Someone's birthday or something other than Valentines day is also celebrated on that day. For me to scream such vulgar language at it, has made me re-think.

There was a science experiment done were a teacher labeled two jars of rice in water. He labeled one good, one bad. For 30 days, he had his students everyday go into class and shout negative hateful things to the negative rice, and loving nice things to the positive rice. At the end of the 30 days, the positive rice had no mole, and the negative rice was filled with mole. The point: He showed that our energy is what caused the rice to turn bad and our loving emotions is what caused the rice to not mole. When we shout so much hate at Valentine's day, what are we doing? That simple experiment made me think about A LOT of things this world shouts hate at. So, Valentines day is a special day because someone, somewhere is born on that day, somewhere, someone has something special to celebrate. Maybe Valentine's Day can become the day were Love is reborn. We go through so much hate through out the year, maybe that one day could be re-boot of love...I could be wrong. lol

  3. Dean, we have imported the culture out here, with the attendant swooning and charades. Unfortunately, we couldn't import the holiday. That said, I agree with the general sentiment of your post: any day is a great day to present a rose to someone who sets your heart aflutter, even if momentarily.

  4. I'm glad you guys have imported the culture out there, just don't make it cheesy. The moment it becomes so commercial, it looses the value. Remember, Valentines day is not about a day of how much money you can spend, it's a day of how much love you can spread...

  5. I've never been much of a V-Day aficionado, just because it's so commercialized and superficial. Makes more sense to treat your honey as if every day were Valentine's Day.

    1. EXACTLY. I wonder if they switched months would that help? lol I mean seriously, there is no holiday for August. I think February is to damn close to Christmas. I feel like the moment you start recovering from Christmas, SMACK! Valentine's Day. Even at that rate, you can't put a price on love.

  6. Dean, I don't celebrate any of the "official" holidays. Not even New Year's Eve. Every day is a holiday to me.
